The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has released the full details of candidates contesting in the upcoming Anambra State governorship election.
In a statement issued on Saturday by the National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, Sam Olumekun, the Commission confirmed that 16 political parties submitted their nominations before the May 12, 2025 deadline, which automatically closed the online portal.
“Following the conclusion of party primaries, sixteen (16) political parties have uploaded their candidates’ nomination forms,” Olumekun stated.
In line with Section 29(3) of the Electoral Act 2022, INEC has now made public the personal particulars, academic credentials, and supporting documents of the governorship candidates and their running mates.
“As provided in the Electoral Act, the Commission has published the personal particulars of each candidate and his running mate by displaying copies of the Form EC9… at our State Headquarters and the 21 Local Government offices across Anambra State,” the statement noted.
INEC has also urged Nigerians to scrutinize the documents and raise legal objections if necessary. “Any aspirant who participated in his/her party primaries with reasonable grounds to believe that the information provided by a candidate is false can challenge the nomination in a Federal High Court,” the Commission advised.
The final list of candidates will be released on June 9, 2025, while the governorship election is scheduled for November 8, 2025.
This move, according to the electoral body, aligns with the timeline of activities outlined for the Anambra election under the Electoral Act 2022.
