Representatives of camps loyal to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, and governors elected on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party are expected to meet on Monday as efforts intensify to resolve the party’s prolonged leadership crisis.

The meeting is part of ongoing reconciliation moves aimed at finding common ground after months of disagreements over the party’s leadership structure.

Sources within the party disclosed that members of a joint committee from both sides had already held an initial meeting on Friday. During the session, representatives discussed key areas of disagreement and agreed to return to their respective camps to consult stakeholders and outline their positions ahead of the next meeting.

According to insiders, each side is expected to present conditions and proposals that will be reviewed by the committee in a bid to harmonise them and chart a path toward unity.

The crisis within the party escalated after disagreements over a national convention held in Ibadan in November, which produced a National Working Committee led by Tanimu Turaki.

While PDP governors backed the convention, a faction aligned with Wike rejected the outcome and set up a separate caretaker committee, deepening the leadership dispute.
The standoff later led to clashes at the party’s national secretariat in Abuja when rival groups attempted to hold separate meetings at the facility.

Following the incident, security operatives sealed the secretariat.
Both factions subsequently sought recognition from the Independent National Electoral Commission, but the electoral body declined to acknowledge either side, prompting a series of legal battles.

The dispute eventually reached the Court of Appeal of Nigeria, which nullified the Ibadan convention that produced the National Working Committee, ruling that the process violated relevant laws and party regulations.

Another appellate panel later encouraged the parties to pursue an out-of-court settlement, paving the way for the ongoing reconciliation efforts.

Party leaders, including Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde, have reportedly initiated moves to bridge the divide between the factions.

Despite the talks, the Wike camp has insisted that preparations for a planned national convention later this month are ongoing and should not be suspended.

However, leaders from both camps say the reconciliation process remains crucial to restoring unity in the party ahead of preparations for the 2027 general elections.
