The West African Examination Council (WAEC) has tendered before the Lagos State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal the certificate it presented to Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu back in 1981.
This is in the wake of claims by the Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP), as well as Olajide Adediran, its Governorship candidate that Governor Sanwo-Olu did not possess a WAEC certificate.
The certificate, which was presented to the tribunal by an official of the institution, Adekanmbi Olaolu, and to the governor by Ijebu Ife Community Grammar School in the said year above, was admitted in evidence by the tribunal.
However, Clement Onwuenwunor (SAN), Lead Counsel for the Petitioner, who had summoned the witness, rebuffed the evidence on the grounds that it was contrary to its own initial findings which indicated an absence of the governor’s name and result on WAEC’s online result verification portal when a search was carried out.
He further added that Adekanmbi Olaolu was “not being a witness of truth”; a claim that was dismissed by both INEC’s Counsel, Adetunji Oyeyipo (SAN), and Muiz Banire (SAN), Counsel to the governor. Justice Arum Ashom adjourned to July 4, further hearing in the petition.
