Victims of the devastating gas tanker explosion under the Otedola bridge on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway are mourning the loss of loved ones, livelihoods, and property.
The explosion, which occurred on Tuesday, left several dead and many others with irreparable damage.
“My brother, Rotimi Adeleye, was trying to save a customer’s car when the explosion struck,” said Taye Iyadun, recalling the heartbreaking loss of his sibling. “He left his own vehicle behind to rescue the customer’s, but he was caught in the flames. His death is a blow we will never recover from.”
The explosion, triggered by a gas tanker that lost control, resulted in the destruction of over 18 vehicles, nine tricycles, and several businesses. For traders like Tawa Kareem, the pain is unimaginable. “I just restocked my shops that day. Now, I’ve lost my car and goods worth over N25m. Everything is gone,” she said, visibly distraught.
Tricycle operator Idris Rafiu, who lost his only source of income, is struggling with both financial and emotional trauma. “I don’t know how I’m going to take care of my family. My source of income is gone, and I’m still in shock from what happened,” he lamented.
As the survivors come to terms with their losses, the wreckage at the site tells the story of lives shattered by an unforeseen tragedy.
The victims are left grappling not only with the destruction of their businesses and vehicles but also the emotional toll of a day they will never forget.
