The United States has approved plans to reduce its military presence in Germany, with about 5,000 soldiers expected to leave the country over the next year.

The Pentagon said the decision follows a review of US military deployment across Europe, aimed at adjusting force levels in line with current security needs. Officials noted that the withdrawal will be gradual and should be completed within six to twelve months.

Germany currently hosts more than 36,000 US troops, making it one of Washington’s most important military bases in Europe. The planned reduction marks a shift in how the US manages its security commitments on the continent.

The move comes amid growing political and economic tensions between the United States and several European allies. Washington has recently raised concerns over trade agreements and has signaled plans to increase tariffs on vehicles imported from the European Union.

US leadership has also pushed for European countries to take on more responsibility for their own defense, especially as security concerns remain high due to ongoing conflict involving Russia and Ukraine.

German officials have said they are prepared for adjustments in US troop levels but emphasized the importance of maintaining key American military installations in the country, including strategic air bases used for NATO operations.

While the US has not ruled out further changes in troop deployment across Europe, officials say the current move is part of a broader reassessment of its global military posture.
