The United States has dispatched two senior figures linked to former President Donald Trump to Pakistan for discussions tied to efforts aimed at easing tensions with Iran.

Special envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, Trump’s son-in-law, are expected to arrive in Islamabad on Saturday. The move is part of ongoing diplomatic efforts to explore possible pathways toward reducing hostilities and encouraging dialogue in the region.

According to White House officials, the Iranian side has shown some willingness to engage indirectly, although no direct meeting between US and Iranian officials has been confirmed. US authorities say Vice-President JD Vance is on standby to join the process if progress is made.

Iranian representatives are already in Pakistan for separate discussions with local officials, but Tehran has clarified that its engagement will not include direct talks with the United States. Instead, it says its position will be communicated through Pakistani channels.

The diplomatic activity comes at a time of heightened tension in the region, with continued instability affecting key global shipping routes and contributing to fluctuations in oil prices. Washington has maintained pressure on Tehran, insisting that any agreement must include verifiable limits on Iran’s nuclear activities.

Iran, on its part, has accused the US and its allies of escalating tensions through sanctions and military actions, arguing that such measures make negotiations more difficult.

US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth said Iran still has an opportunity to reach a diplomatic settlement if it meets required conditions, but warned that the situation remains sensitive.

While expectations for immediate breakthroughs remain uncertain, both sides continue to signal interest in keeping diplomatic channels open as efforts to manage the conflict continue.
