Uganda’s opposition leader, Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, also known as Bobi Wine, has left the country after weeks in hiding following January’s disputed presidential election.
In a video posted on X, Wine thanked Ugandans who helped protect him but did not reveal his current location, promising to return “at the right time.” The military-led pursuit has been linked to General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, son of President Yoweri Museveni, who publicly criticized Wine and suggested he is wanted for unspecified crimes.
Wine has rejected official results giving Museveni 71.6% of the vote. The president, in power since 1986, is scheduled for a seventh inauguration in May. Wine remains a key symbol of political change for Uganda’s youth, many of whom are frustrated with unemployment and corruption.
