The United States Mission in Nigeria has announced that its Embassy in Abuja and Consulate General in Lagos will not open for public services on Monday, May 25, 2026, due to the observance of Memorial Day in the United States.

The announcement was made through the mission’s official social media platform, where it explained that the closure is in line with the annual American federal holiday set aside to honour military personnel who died while serving the country.

Memorial Day is observed every year on the last Monday of May across the United States. The day is usually marked with remembrance activities, including visits to cemeteries and memorial sites dedicated to fallen soldiers.

As part of the tradition, volunteers and families often place American flags on the graves of deceased service members in national cemeteries to pay tribute to their sacrifice.
Normal operations at both diplomatic offices are expected to resume after the holiday.
