CNN has described US President Donald Trump’s decision to restrict the network and two other news organisations from the White House as an attack on press freedom.

The network reacted after Trump announced that CNN, MS NOW and Politico would be barred from the White House, accusing the outlets of repeatedly publishing what he described as false reports.

Trump made the announcement on his Truth Social platform but did not provide specific examples to support his allegations against the three organisations.

CNN rejected the accusation, saying its coverage of the White House was fair and accurate and protected by the First Amendment of the US Constitution.

The network said preventing its journalists from accessing the White House would amount to an unlawful restriction of constitutionally protected press freedom.

Trump also warned that other media organisations could face similar action, saying news outlets should not be allowed to publish what he considers false information about his administration or the United States.

The development is the latest dispute between Trump and major American news organisations over media coverage of his presidency.

The move has also raised legal questions over whether the White House can restrict journalists because of their reporting.

CNN maintained that its journalists would continue to carry out their responsibility of reporting on the Trump administration despite the announced restrictions.
