United States President Donald Trump has jokingly suggested he plans to seek a fourth term in office, despite the U.S. Constitution limiting presidents to a maximum of two elected terms.
Speaking at the rescheduled White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner in Washington, D.C., on Friday, Trump drew laughter from the audience when he claimed he was preparing another presidential bid, describing the announcement as an exclusive revelation.
Wearing a red “Trump 2028” cap during his remarks, the president quipped that he intended to run again, adding that campaigning for the presidency had become something he was “very good at.”
Trump also repeated his long-standing claim that he won the 2020 presidential election, which was officially won by former President Joe Biden. He again alleged the election was “rigged,” an assertion that has been rejected by U.S. courts and election officials.
The 22nd Amendment to the U.S. Constitution prohibits anyone from being elected president more than twice, making any attempt at a third elected term constitutionally impossible.
The event marked Trump’s first appearance at the annual White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner since returning to office. He had skipped the gathering throughout his first administration and during the early months of his second term.
The dinner, originally scheduled for April, was postponed after a shooting near the venue prompted the evacuation of attendees, including Trump and First Lady Melania Trump. Authorities later arrested a suspect in connection with the incident.
This year’s event was held under heightened security at the Waldorf Astoria in Washington, D.C., replacing the Washington Hilton, which had hosted the dinner for nearly six decades.
