President Tinubu has been blamed for the failure of the Federal Government to implement the Supreme Court’s ruling on direct allocations to local government accounts.
In July, the Court ordered that the FG must pay monthly allocations directly into the accounts of the 774 local government councils.
However, four months later, the Federation Accounts Allocation Committee is still disbursing funds into joint state-local government accounts.
The delay has been linked to President Bola Tinubu’s failure to approve the full implementation of local government financial autonomy.
According to Akeem Ambali, National President of the National Union of Local Government Employees, an inter-ministerial committee chaired by Senator George Akume submitted a report to the President for approval, but the green light has not yet been given.
Meanwhile, Bawa Mokwa, Director of Press and Public Relations at the Office of the Accountant-General of the Federation, claims that the process for direct disbursement is ongoing, although he could not provide a timeline for its commencement.
The Federal Government had initially set a three-month period to resolve operational challenges and implement the ruling, which was expected to conclude in October. However, the deadline has passed without the necessary adjustments being made
