President Bola Tinubu has revealed the government’s latest strides in supporting students and educational institutions across the country.
During the 33rd Convocation of the Federal University of Technology, Minna, represented by Hajiya Rakiya Gambo Ilyasu, a director at the Ministry of Education, the President disclosed that over N104 billion has been disbursed through the newly established student loan scheme to 600 students nationwide.
Highlighting the government’s dedication to tackling the financial barriers to education, Tinubu further revealed that a substantial N940 billion has been earmarked for the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFUND) in the 2025 budget.
This is part of a broader commitment to not only address financial challenges but also to revamp Nigeria’s educational infrastructure.
“We remain resolute in addressing challenges in the education sector, including ensuring industrial harmony in universities,” President Tinubu said, underscoring the government’s focus on long-term solutions for stability in higher education.
One of the measures cited was the renegotiation of the 2009 agreement with university staff unions, which promises to ease tensions and improve working conditions.
The president also took the opportunity to challenge graduates, urging them to embrace their potential and contribute meaningfully to society: “You have been equipped with knowledge and skills to innovate and contribute to society. Let integrity, resilience, and purpose guide your endeavours.”
In his address, the Vice Chancellor of the university, Professor Farouk Adamu Kuta, unveiled plans to expand the institution’s infrastructure, boost research capabilities, and integrate more entrepreneurial and digital-focused programs to meet the growing demands of the global workforce.
As part of the event’s ceremony, two state governors—Alhaji Mohammed Umaru Bago of Niger State and Uba Sani of Kaduna State—along with Senator representing Niger East Senatorial District, were honored with honorary doctorate degrees, marking a day of celebration for academic achievement and future prospects.
The President’s push for stronger industry-academia collaborations and a more robust education system is a clear signal that the government is focused on creating opportunities for young Nigerians to thrive.
