President Bola Tinubu has officially approved the adoption of Tai Solarin University of Education (TASUED) in Ijagun, Ogun State, as a federal university.
This marks a significant development, making TASUED the first federally owned tertiary institution in Ogun East senatorial district.
The announcement was made via a press release on Sunday, signed by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy.
Established by Ogun State in 2005, TASUED is Nigeria’s first specialized university of education.
“This is an opportunity for the Federal Government to honour Chief Obafemi Awolowo, who pioneered the free education programme in Western Nigeria, and Dr. Tai Solarin, who dedicated his life to educating our children,” President Tinubu remarked.
He also acknowledged the role of the Awujale of Ijebuland in ensuring the university’s survival, especially during a 2012 crisis that nearly led to its closure.
The transition to a federal institution will require minimal investment, thanks to TASUED’s already advanced infrastructure and academic programs.
The move is also part of the Federal Government’s strategy to enhance teacher education nationwide.
With this change, TASUED joins Alvan Ikoku Federal University of Education in Owerri and Adeyemi Federal University of Education in Ondo under the government’s supervision.
