President Bola Tinubu has paid glowing tribute to elder statesman and Afenifere leader, Reuben Fasoranti, as he clocks 100 on May 11, describing him as a symbol of integrity, discipline, and unwavering commitment to Nigeria.

In a personally signed message, the President expressed deep joy at the centenary milestone, noting that Fasoranti’s life reflects decades of principled leadership and public service worthy of national recognition.

Tinubu highlighted Fasoranti’s academic journey through the University of Ibadan, the University of Hull, and Maguire University, saying his educational background shaped his lifelong dedication to learning and mentorship. He also referenced Fasoranti’s contributions to education through the establishment of schools, including St. Frances’ Academy, founded in memory of his late wife.

Reflecting on his political path, Tinubu described Fasoranti as a devoted follower of the ideals of Obafemi Awolowo and one of the remaining torchbearers of the Awoist philosophy.

He recalled Fasoranti’s involvement with the Action Group and later the Unity Party of Nigeria, as well as his tenure as Commissioner for Finance in the old Ondo State between 1979 and 1983, where he was known for fiscal discipline.

The President also acknowledged Fasoranti’s prominent role during the struggle against military rule, noting that he became a strong voice demanding a return to democratic governance. Within Afenifere, Tinubu said Fasoranti emerged as a unifying and authentic leader following internal disagreements after the passing of Abraham Adesanya.

Tinubu referenced the personal trials Fasoranti has endured over the years, including surviving an assassination attempt during the regime of Sani Abacha, the loss of his wife in 1991, and the tragic killing of his daughter, Funke Olakunrin, in 2019. Despite these setbacks, the President noted that Fasoranti remained steadfast in his service to the country.

He further recalled the elder statesman’s prayers and support during his presidential campaign, expressing gratitude for Fasoranti’s continued encouragement of the Renewed Hope agenda.

Tinubu concluded by wishing Fasoranti good health and long life, while thanking him for a century of dedication to nation-building and principled leadership.
