A 13-year-old boy has died after a fountain collapsed during celebrations of Spain’s 2026 FIFA World Cup triumph in the western Spanish town of Ciudad Rodrigo.

Local authorities said the incident occurred shortly after 12:30 a.m. on Monday when numerous fans climbed onto the fountain to celebrate Spain’s victory over Argentina in the World Cup final.

The structure gave way under the weight, trapping several people.

In a statement, the Ciudad Rodrigo City Hall expressed its condolences to the victim’s family, saying what should have been a joyous celebration had turned into tragedy.

Emergency services confirmed they received multiple distress calls following the collapse and said another young person was injured, while several others also sustained injuries.

Spain secured their first World Cup title since 2010 with victory over Argentina on Sunday, sparking celebrations across the country.

However, the festivities in Ciudad Rodrigo ended in heartbreak following the fatal accident. Authorities are expected to investigate the cause of the collapse.
