In a recent appearance at Funke Akindele’s Creative Blueprint Masterclass, renowned singer and songwriter Waje shared a crucial piece of advice for aspiring musicians: raw talent isn’t enough to succeed in the music industry.

Reflecting on her journey, Waje confessed that early in her career, she believed her powerful voice would be her ticket to success.

However, as she navigated the competitive industry, she quickly learned that talent alone wouldn’t guarantee longevity.

“You are your brand, so how are you cultivating that to ensure you’re earning money?” Waje stated.

“In the music business, your music is your product, and your audience is your market. Without a clear business approach, you could be leaving money and opportunities on the table.”

Waje also emphasized the importance of adapting to the rapidly evolving music landscape, where creativity must be paired with solid business knowledge.

“The world has changed, and so has the way people consume music. As an artist, it’s not enough to rely solely on raw talent—you must also understand and engage with the business side of things,” she explained.

She urged artists to focus on building a strong brand, engaging with their audience, and planning for long-term financial sustainability.

“As great as music is, how sustainable is it? Be smart enough to know that as you’re being creative, you’re also a smart creative—investing in other fields,” Waje concluded.
