African Action Congress presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore has returned to Nigeria from the United States to continue his campaign ahead of the 2027 presidential election.

Sowore announced his return in a statement on Sunday, saying he was pleased to be back in the country and reunited with his family after spending more than 20 months in the US.

He said his departure from Nigeria followed what he described as a period involving arrests, detention, travel restrictions and the seizure of his international passport by security agencies.

During his time in the US, Sowore said he engaged with Nigerians in the diaspora, activists, supporters and other stakeholders on national issues and his political programme. He also participated in a solidarity march for Palestine in New York and continued his advocacy for voting rights for Nigerians living abroad.

The AAC candidate said he would continue to push for diaspora voting, adding that an administration led by his party would seek to allow Nigerians living outside the country to participate in elections.

Sowore said his return would usher in another phase of his nationwide campaign. He plans to meet with workers, students, youths, women, farmers, traders, professionals and communities across Nigeria as part of his campaign activities.

According to him, the engagements will focus on issues contained in the AAC’s 2027 agenda, including equal rights, justice, peace, security and economic development.

He also said he would continue attending court proceedings relating to the cybercrime case brought against him by the Department of State Services in 2025.

Sowore said the 2027 election would give Nigerians an opportunity to determine the direction of the country’s political leadership, while reaffirming his intention to take his campaign message directly to voters across the country.

His return comes as political parties and presidential candidates intensify preparations and campaign activities ahead of the 2027 election.
