Vice-President Kashim Shettima will represent President Bola Tinubu at the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, United States.

Shettima’s media aide, Stanley Nkwocha, disclosed this in a statement on Sunday, saying the President had directed the Vice-President to lead Nigeria’s delegation to the annual global gathering.

The Nigerian delegation is expected to include Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara, Zamfara State Governor Dauda Lawal, members of the Federal Executive Council and other senior government officials.

Shettima is scheduled to present Nigeria’s national statement during the General Debate, outlining the country’s priorities on issues including economic development, peace and security, international cooperation and other matters affecting Nigeria.

The Vice-President will also attend high-level meetings focused on areas such as the right to development and climate action.

According to the statement, Shettima is expected to hold bilateral discussions with foreign leaders, international organisations and development partners during the UNGA week.

The meetings are expected to focus on strengthening Nigeria’s international partnerships and advancing the country’s interests in areas including economic diplomacy, sustainable development, climate financing and reforms to the global financial system.

The 81st UN General Assembly is being held under the theme, “Restoring trust, managing transformation: A United Nations that delivers for all.”

The General Debate is scheduled to take place from September 22 to 28, 2026.

Shettima’s appearance at the gathering will mark the third consecutive year he has led Nigeria’s delegation to the UN General Assembly.

He delivered Nigeria’s national address at the 2024 and 2025 sessions, while President Tinubu last attended the UNGA in 2023.
