Sanwo-Olu Celebrates Lagos Fanti Carnival

- 21 April 2025

Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has described the return of the historic Fanti Carnival as a “powerful reconnection to our roots,” celebrating its vibrant comeback as a unifying force for the people of Lagos Island.

In a statement posted on his official X handle on Sunday, the governor praised the cultural spectacle, saying, “It wasn’t just a celebration; it was a powerful reconnection to our roots, a revival of a cultural legacy that has shaped who we are.”

The carnival featured three major highlights: the Afro-Brazilian Food Fair, a Heritage Art Exhibition, and a Grand Parade that brought together traditional masquerades, samba-inspired drummers, and jubilant dancers.

Sanwo-Olu, who joined crowds on the streets, said, “Today, the streets of Lagos Island transformed into a vibrant tapestry of colour, rhythm, and expressions of community.”

He also emphasized the event’s historical significance, tracing its roots to Afro-Brazilian returnees of the 1800s who influenced the area’s culture with samba beats, elaborate costumes, and architecture.

“This year’s carnival was exceptional,” he added. “It was an absolute pleasure to see so many people come together to embrace the spirit of unity, resilience, and joy that the Fanti Carnival embodies.”

The governor applauded the massive turnout, noting how the event fostered collective pride and cultural reconnection for residents of Lagos.

The Fanti Carnival, once a staple of Lagos Island’s identity, has been revived to reflect the city’s heritage while showcasing its modern-day cultural diversity.
