Babajide Sanwo-Olu has authorised a ₦50,000 wage award for public servants in Lagos State as a temporary relief measure to ease the pressure of rising living costs.

The announcement was made during the International Workers’ Day event held at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena, where the governor was represented by his deputy, Obafemi Hamzat. The extra payment will apply for the month of May.

According to the state government, the decision is intended to help workers cope with economic headwinds, including higher fuel prices and broader global cost pressures. The governor praised the role of civil servants, teachers, healthcare staff and artisans, describing them as the backbone of Lagos’ progress.

He also addressed challenges many workers face with accommodation and daily commuting, noting that these issues remain priorities for the administration. Sanwo-Olu pointed to ongoing investment in affordable housing projects across the state, with thousands of units already delivered and more expected before the end of 2026. He added that the rent-to-own housing scheme requires a five per cent initial payment, with repayment plans structured to be manageable for beneficiaries.

On transportation, the governor highlighted continued expansion of the state’s rail network, saying the system has already transported millions of passengers while additional coaches and routes are being introduced to improve mobility and productivity.

The administration further assured retirees of consistent pension payments and reiterated its willingness to maintain open engagement with organised labour groups.

Earlier at the event, the Head of Service, Bode Agoro, emphasised that improving workers’ welfare remains central to efficient public service and sustainable development in the state.
