Reflecting on Loss: Honoring the Legacies of Herbert Wigwe and Abimbola Ogunbanjo – Henry Balogun

- 12 February 2024

In a world where life can change in an instant, we are reminded of the fragility of our existence and the profound impact of sudden loss.

Today, we mourn the untimely passing of two esteemed individuals whose contributions to our nation and society transcended boundaries of race, ethnicity, faith and politics.

Mr. Herbert Wigwe, CON, Chief Executive Officer of Access Holdings Plc and founder of the How Foundation and Mr. Abimbola Ogunbanjo, OFR, former Group Chairman of the Nigerian Exchange Group Plc, have left an indelible mark on our hearts and minds.

Their tragic departure serves as a poignant reminder of the unpredictability of life and the need to cherish each moment we are given. In the midst of our grief, we must pause to reflect on the legacies they leave behind – legacies of leadership, integrity, and unwavering dedication to the betterment of our nation and the welfare of all Nigerians.

Mr. Wigwe and Mr. Ogunbanjo exemplified the highest ideals of professionalism and philanthropy, using their positions of influence to uplift others and create positive change in our society. Their commitment to excellence and their tireless efforts to promote social well-being serve as a beacon of inspiration for us all.

As we mourn their loss, let us also take solace in the knowledge that their contributions will continue to resonate far beyond their time with us. Let us honor their memory by striving to emulate their virtues and by rededicating ourselves to the service of humanity. In the face of tragedy, let us be reminded of the preciousness of life and the imperative to make every moment count.

In closing, I am reminded of the words of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow:

“Life is real! Life is earnest!

And the grave is not its goal;

Dust thou art, to dust returnest,

Was not spoken of the soul.”

May we all find solace in the knowledge that Herbert Wigwe, his wife Chizoba and his son, as well as  Abimbola Ogunbanjo’s souls now rest in peace, and may their legacies continue to inspire us to strive for excellence and to serve humanity with compassion and dedication.

In deepest sympathy and solidarity,

Henry Balogun.
