The Sultan of Sokoto, and President General, Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA) Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar III, has officially declared today, March 1, 2025, as the first day of Ramadan 1446 AH in Nigeria.

The announcement was made following the sighting of the new crescent moon in Sokoto and other parts of the country.

In a broadcast to the nation, the Sultan confirmed, “After due verification and authentication by the national moon sighting committee… I hereby announce the sighting of the new moon of Ramadan, signifying the end of Sha’aban 1446 AH.”

Muslims across Nigeria have been urged to observe the sacred month of fasting, prayer, and reflection.

The Sultan encouraged the faithful to devote themselves to worship and to pray for the peace and prosperity of the nation.

He also called on affluent individuals to assist the underprivileged during this holy period, emphasizing the importance of religious tolerance.

President Bola Tinubu extended his best wishes to Muslims globally, stating, “Ramadan is a time for spiritual rejuvenation, self-discipline, and empathy for the less fortunate.”

He expressed optimism for the future, citing his administration’s policies that have resulted in a stabilizing exchange rate, declining fuel prices, and lower food costs.

“Let us use this period to strengthen our bonds with Allah and one another, fostering unity and peace in our communities,” the President added, linking this Ramadan to a season of “renewed hope and progress” for Nigeria.

The month of Ramadan, expected to last until late March, culminates in the celebration of Eid al-Fitr.
