Fans of controversial singer, Okikiola Habeeb, popularly known as Portable, were taken aback when he was crowned the ‘King of the Streets’ during a recent event in Ore, Ondo town.
At the ceremony, which was attended by some traditional rulers, Portable wore a white outfit, surrounded by other monarchs dressed similarly. In videos that circulated online, one of the rulers placed a green and white crown on Portable’s head, with the inscription King of the Streets. Along with the crown, Portable was presented with various gifts, while the crowd cheered in celebration.
Since receiving the title, Portable has been visibly elated, sharing videos of himself dancing and proudly embracing his new royal status. However, the event has sparked a wave of reactions from fans on social media.
An Instagram user, The Conformist, questioned the merit of the crowning, commenting, “Congratulations to a king with no kingdom.” Chyddo expressed frustration, writing, “Money has really changed things; nowadays, nothing is given based on merit or dignity anymore. If you have money, people will bow to you.”
Tynoni raised concerns about the integrity of the tradition, stating, “This undermines tradition.” Sebastine Sylvester also asked, “What kind of political position is this? Where is this officially recognized in Nigeria?”
On the other hand, some supporters defended Portable. Official MDG remarked, “Portable has done a lot of good for the people of Sango Ota,” showing their belief that the singer deserves the recognition.
