Former Anambra State Governor and 2027 presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, Peter Obi, has commemorated the victims of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks in the United States, calling for greater commitment to peace and respect for human life.

Obi made the remarks on Saturday after attending a prayer and remembrance service in New York to mark 25 years since the attacks that claimed nearly 3,000 lives.

The former Labour Party presidential candidate said the tragedy continued to affect families who lost loved ones and the wider American society decades after the incident.

He also paid tribute to firefighters, police officers, emergency responders and civilians who put their lives at risk while attempting to rescue people during the attacks.

According to Obi, the courage displayed by those who responded to the disaster remains an example of the capacity for selflessness and compassion even during extreme tragedy.

He stressed that the value of human life should not be determined by nationality, race, religion or political affiliation, urging people across the world to recognise their shared humanity.

Obi expressed sympathy and solidarity with families still mourning those who died, as well as with the American people.

He also called for a world where peace, justice, compassion and respect for human life take precedence over hatred and terrorism.

Following the memorial service, Obi said he continued with his scheduled high-level meetings in New York and prayed for a more peaceful world.
