One person has been confirmed dead after an uncompleted four-storey building collapsed in the Independence Layout area of Enugu State.

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) said the incident occurred around 6 a.m. on Sunday, prompting an immediate emergency response.

Following the collapse, NEMA Director-General, Zubaida Umar, directed the agency’s Enugu Operations Office to deploy a rescue team to the scene and work with other emergency responders.

On arrival, rescuers were informed that some people were still trapped beneath the rubble. Search and rescue efforts began immediately, with an excavator brought in to assist in clearing the debris.

NEMA said the body of a male victim was recovered from the site at about 11:20 a.m.

The agency added that rescue operations were continuing as emergency workers searched the rubble to determine whether more victims remained trapped.

The operation involves NEMA, the Enugu State Emergency Management Agency, the Nigeria Police Force, the Enugu State Fire and Rescue Service, the Enugu State Capital Territory Development Authority, and the state Ministry of Works and Infrastructure.
