THE Federal Government has declared Thursday, October 1, 2026, a public holiday to mark the Nigeria’s 66th independence anniversary.
Minister of Interior, Dr Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, who made the declaration on behalf of the Federal Government, congratulated Nigerians at home and in the diaspora on the occasion.
In a statement signed by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Dr Magdalene Ajani, the minister noted that Nigeria’s welcoming spirit, love, and abundant human capital make it the most prosperous black nation in the world.
Stressing that peace and stability are necessary conditions for national development, Tunji-Ojo called on Nigerians to emulate the nation’s founding fathers.
He urged citizens to demonstrate love for the fatherland and collaborate to build a country that future generations will be proud of, adding that a new Nigeria is achievable and that Nigeria is Africa’s pride.
He said; “As we celebrate 66 years of our independence, we should always remember that there is hope for our country and our diversity is our strength.
“Our collective determination remains the foundation upon which a stronger and more prosperous nation will be built.”
The minister reassured the public that the current administration is dedicated to ensuring a better Nigeria for all citizens as a fitting tribute to the nation’s past heroes.
He further used the occasion to urge citizens to exhibit the values of unity, patriotism, peaceful coexistence, and mutual respect.
Tunji-Ojo assured Nigerians that the administration remains fully committed to strengthening national security, improving public safety, and creating an enabling environment where citizens can live, work, and confidently pursue their legitimate aspirations.
