Oborevwori Absent As APC Governors Welcome Defectors In Abuja

- 27 April 2025

Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori was notably absent on Saturday night as the Progressive Governors’ Forum (PGF) held a meeting in Abuja to welcome new entrants into the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Oborevwori, who recently dumped the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the APC, was expected at the gathering hosted at the Imo Governors’ Lodge. His no-show has raised eyebrows, especially as other key Delta politicians made an appearance.

Those present included Senator Ned Nwoko (Delta North), Minister of Aviation Festus Keyamo, former Deputy Senate President Ovie Omo-Agege, APC National Publicity Secretary Felix Morka, and former governorship candidate Great Ogboru, among others.

Oborevwori had earlier cited “several factors” for his departure from the PDP, a move that also saw his predecessor, Ifeanyi Okowa, and the entire PDP structure in Delta State defect to the APC. Supporters argue the ruling party offers a “better platform” for the oil-rich state.

The wave of defections, particularly Okowa’s switch, has stirred political debate nationwide. Analysts see it as a major setback for the PDP’s chances in the 2027 elections.

However, PDP leaders remain defiant.

“What impact has the APC, as a government, given to the people? There is anger in the land,” said PDP chieftain Bode George. “The people of Delta are naturally PDP members… If you now decide to go, we wish you the best of luck.”

Similarly, former Senate President Bukola Saraki and ex-Vice President Atiku Abubakar insist the party will bounce back stronger ahead of 2027.

Meanwhile, APC leaders like Governor Abdullahi Sule of Nasarawa have hinted that more defections are on the way, signaling an intensifying battle ahead of the next general polls.
