Nigerians are showing growing interest in Lenacapavir, a newly introduced injection that helps prevent HIV infection, ahead of its nationwide rollout. Health facilities and NGOs across several states report a surge in demand, especially among individuals aware of pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP).

The Federal Government has begun distributing the injection in selected pilot states, including Akwa Ibom, Anambra, Benue, Cross River, Ebonyi, Gombe, Kano, Kwara, Lagos, and the Federal Capital Territory. A national launch is scheduled for March 24 across these locations.

Developed by Gilead Sciences and endorsed by the World Health Organization in 2025, Lenacapavir is a preventive medication for people who are HIV-negative. Experts emphasize that it is not a cure for HIV and should not be taken by pregnant women.

Community leaders and NGOs say demand is particularly high among discordant couples where one partner is HIV-positive and the other is not and health workers seeking preventive protection. In Kwara State, the injection is available at six designated health facilities, while Akwa Ibom has set up nine centres for distribution.

Health workers are being trained on proper administration, and the injection will initially be offered at designated health centres and general hospitals. Some residents, however, mistakenly believe it can cure HIV, highlighting the need for awareness campaigns.

Experts report minimal side effects, such as mild swelling or pain at the injection site. Ayuba Tanko, President of the Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria, stressed that the rollout must follow strict regulatory standards to ensure safety and effectiveness.

Officials hope that the introduction of Lenacapavir will help reduce new HIV infections, particularly among high-risk groups, and expand preventive options beyond daily tablets.
