Retired Assistant Comptroller-General ACG of Immigration, Sunday Fagbamigbe, has revealed that Nigeria has over 320 unmanned illegal border routes, which fuels insecurity in the country.

Fagbamigbe, in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria, NAN, on Friday warned that the illegal routes will “provide avenues for insecurity, proliferation of arms, and dumping of unwholesome goods in the country.”

He also said that the porous borders had also encouraged the thriving illegal drug and human trafficking all over the country.

The former immigration boss advised the Federal Government to strengthen border security by investing in advanced technologists like electronic sensors, night vision scopes, drones, and artificial intelligence to improve surveillance and more effectively detect illegal entries.

Fagbamigbe noted that modern surveillance systems, which have shown success in Western countries, are far more effective than depending solely on human personnel.

He also emphasized the need for collaboration with border communities to raise awareness and enhance border management.

“We have to take seriously border management security, and work with border communities.

“We must create a sense of awareness and collaboration,” Fagbamigbe said.
