The Chief Executive Officer of MTN Nigeria, Karl Toriola, says mobile data in Nigeria remains among the most affordable in the world, despite public concerns over rising internet costs.
Speaking at an industry event in Lagos, Toriola argued that when Nigeria’s data prices are compared with those in several other countries, the country still ranks among the cheapest globally. He maintained that even after recent tariff adjustments, telecom services in Nigeria remain competitively priced.
His comments come amid ongoing criticism from users who say the cost of mobile data has increased significantly in recent times.
The pricing debate intensified after the Nigerian Communications Commission approved a 50 percent tariff increase in January 2025. The regulator said the adjustment was necessary due to rising operational expenses and the need to ensure telecom companies can continue investing in infrastructure and service delivery.
It also noted that the decision followed years without a major tariff review and was lower than the higher increases requested by operators.
However, the move sparked strong reactions from consumers and labour groups. The Nigeria Labour Congress described the increase as unfair and burdensome, especially given the current economic challenges faced by many Nigerians.
Despite the backlash, telecom operators maintain that the review is important for sustaining network quality, expanding coverage, and supporting long-term investment in the sector.
