American rap star Nicki Minaj has revealed that her given name, Onika, has a direct connection to the Igbo language.
Minaj made the disclosure while reacting to a fan’s post celebrating her recent appearance at the United Nations, where she spoke out against jihadist attacks targeting Christians in Nigeria. The fan highlighted that “Onika” is believed to be a Trinidadian variation of the Igbo name Onyekachi, often interpreted to mean that no power is greater than God.
The post, shared with a description of the name’s meaning and its cultural variations, suggested that Minaj’s name was a sign that she was destined to use her voice to defend justice. “Let my Nigerian Barbz confirm this divine assignment,” the fan wrote.
Responding on X, Minaj not only affirmed the Igbo link but added another layer of intrigue by noting that the tattoo on her arm translates to “God is with me” in Chinese.
The revelation has drawn excitement from her Nigerian fanbase, especially after her strong remarks at the UN on violence against Christians.
