The Nigerian Citizens Association in South Africa (NICASA) has strongly condemned the alleged murder of Julius Chukwunta, a 37-year-old Nigerian man, by four South African nationals.
The tragic incident, which occurred on December 7, 2024, near Chukwunta’s residence in Midrand Protea Estate, has sparked outrage within the Nigerian community in South Africa, with calls for justice intensifying.
Chukwunta, originally from Aninri Local Government Area in Enugu State, was reportedly attacked when four men blocked his vehicle as he approached his home.
In an attempt to flee, Chukwunta sought refuge at a security office within the estate, but the attackers followed him, severely assaulting him and inflicting head injuries.
His female companion, who witnessed the brutal attack, attempted to get help from the estate’s security staff, but NICASA’s President-General, Dr. Frank Onyekwelu, confirmed that no assistance was offered.
Neither the security team nor the residents made any effort to contact emergency services during the ordeal.
After an hour, Chukwunta’s companion reached out to her father, who, along with other family members, rushed him to Tembisa General Hospital. Despite being placed on life support, Chukwunta tragically passed away on December 10, 2024.
The incident was reported to Midrand Police Station, and the suspects were arrested on December 13, 2024. The four men, aged 20, 24, 27, and 28, were charged with murder and appeared in Alexandra Magistrate Court on December 18, 2024.
While three of the suspects were granted bail of R10,000 each, the fourth suspect did not apply for bail. The case has been adjourned until February 3, 2025.
NICASA has expressed its dissatisfaction with the decision to grant bail to the suspects, calling it a serious disregard for the gravity of the crime. The association has pledged to continue advocating for justice, vowing to ensure that those responsible are held accountable.
NICASA also reiterated its commitment to supporting Chukwunta’s family and emphasized the need for authorities to handle the case with the seriousness it deserves. The association has called for a swift resolution and vowed to seek justice until the perpetrators are brought to justice.
