The Eko Electricity Distribution Company (EKEDC) has confirmed the restoration of power following a major disturbance that caused a nationwide grid collapse on Friday, March 7, 2025.
The outage left large parts of the country, especially Lagos, without electricity for several hours.
According to reports, the national grid’s power generation dropped sharply from about 4,000MW earlier in the day to below 1,000MW by 2 p.m. The peak generation for the day occurred at 5 a.m., reaching 5,284MW. However, by 4 p.m., power generation plummeted to just 803MW, as many generation plants remained offline.
“Dear valued customer, we are glad to inform you that the national grid has been restored, and restoration of power supply to our feeders is progressing gradually,” EKEDC confirmed in a public notice. The company thanked customers for their patience as efforts to return power to the grid continued.
Before the full restoration, Ikeja Electric had earlier notified customers of the outage, stating, “Dear esteemed customer, please be informed that we experienced a system outage today at 14:00hrs, affecting supply within our network.
Restoration of supply is ongoing in collaboration with our critical stakeholders. Kindly bear with us.”
The blackout came just as the federal government was celebrating a historic rise in power generation to 6,000MW, a figure that now seems distant as the grid struggles to regain full capacity.
