A Lagos-based pastor and relationship coach, Kingsley Okonkwo, has defended his decision to get a Bible verse tattooed on his arm, saying the move helped spread the Gospel to a massive audience within a day.

Okonkwo, the lead pastor of David Christian Centre, unveiled the tattoo in a video shared on his official Instagram page to mark his 50th birthday.

The inscription features John 3:16 written in Roman numerals, a verse regarded by many Christians as the foundation of the Gospel message. The video, which opened with a voice-over reading of the scripture, quickly gained traction across social media platforms.

Reacting to the mixed responses that followed, the pastor said critics were more focused on judging the tattoo than acknowledging the message it carried.

According to him, the widespread online attention ensured that the scripture was shared by numerous blogs and social media users, reaching millions within 24 hours.

In a Facebook post, Okonkwo invited members and followers to his thanksgiving and praise service, describing the period as one of celebration. He also said he would address the controversy surrounding the tattoo at a later date.

The development sparked heated discussions online.

Some commentators argued that tattooing contradicts biblical teachings and questioned its appropriateness for a pastor. Others said religious leaders should be cautious about actions that could confuse church members.

However, many supporters defended Okonkwo, praising the tattoo as a creative approach to evangelism. Some followers cited biblical references in support of his action, while others applauded the boldness of sharing faith in an unconventional way.
