Veteran entertainer and social commentator Charles Oputa, popularly known as Charly Boy, has said he accepts his two daughters’ decision to identify as lesbians, noting that his priority is their happiness.
Charly Boy made this known in an interview with Saturday Beats, while responding to reactions to his recent public comments about his daughters and their sexuality.
The entertainer said one of his daughters told him about her sexuality several years ago, while the other disclosed hers more recently. He admitted that accepting the news was initially difficult, but said he eventually decided to respect their choices as adults.
According to him, parents cannot dictate how their grown children should live, adding that his daughters are responsible for their own lives.
Charly Boy said he does not want disagreements over his daughters’ personal decisions to affect their relationship, stressing that his approach is rooted in his love for them.
He acknowledged that he had mixed feelings about the situation, particularly because he had hoped his younger daughter would have children before choosing a same-sex relationship.
The entertainer also said his parenting style has changed over the years. He argued that parents of millennials and Generation Z should focus more on offering advice and explaining their reasoning rather than attempting to control their children through commands or punishment.
Charly Boy further described himself as an open and supportive father, saying he wants his children to be independent and make decisions about their own lives.
During the interview, he also discussed his relationship with former President Olusegun Obasanjo, whom he described as both a close friend and a father figure.
He said the two regularly speak for several hours, sometimes discussing religion and personal matters, and that he often seeks Obasanjo’s advice when trying to resolve difficult issues.
Charly Boy said their relationship developed naturally and that he values the former president’s sincerity and openness.
