The Chief Executive Officer of MTN Nigeria, Karl Olutokun Toriola, has said the company experiences more fiber optic cable cuts in a single day in Nigeria than it does in an entire year in Saudi Arabia, highlighting the infrastructure challenges facing the country’s telecommunications sector.
Speaking during an interview on TVC, Toriola attributed the frequent fiber cuts to vandalism and uncoordinated road construction, noting that the recurring damage to telecom infrastructure continues to disrupt network services across the country.
He said the operating environment remains a major obstacle for telecom operators, adding that unreliable electricity supply also forces companies to rely on generators to power virtually every base station.
Toriola’s remarks come amid growing complaints from subscribers over poor call quality, slow internet speeds and recurring network outages.
The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has repeatedly urged telecommunications operators to improve the quality of their services. However, industry players maintain that infrastructure damage and power challenges continue to hinder efforts to deliver reliable connectivity.
