Mr. President off to commonwealth summit in Rwanda

President Muhammadu Buhari has departed Abuja for Kigali, Rwanda, to attend the 26th Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM). The annual event which started on June 20 will be concluded on June 26, 2022.

Femi Adesina, Special Adviser to the President, revealed this in a statement, noting that at CHOGM 2022, Buhari will join other Commonwealth leaders to participate in discussions focused on the progress and prosperity of all 54 comprising member states in Africa, Asia, the Americas, Europe, and the Pacific.

On June 24, President Buhari will attend the official opening ceremony, which will be followed by high-level meetings of Heads of State and Government on Friday, June 24 and Saturday, June 25.

The leaders will discuss a variety of topics, including post-COVID-19 economic recovery, debt sustainability, climate change, poverty reduction, youth entrepreneurship and employment, trade, and food security.

On the sidelines of the meeting, the Nigerian president is scheduled to speak at the Malaria and Neglected Tropical Diseases Summit High-Level Session and participate in an Intergenerational Dialogue for Youth.

President Buhari is also expected to hold bilateral talks with some Commonwealth leaders.

The President will be accompanied by the Ministers of Foreign Affairs, Geoffrey Onyeama, Finance, Budget and National Planning, Zainab Ahmed, Health, Osagie Ehanire, Environment, Mohammed Abdullahi, and Communications and Digital Economy, Isa Ali Pantami.

The National Security Adviser, Maj-Gen Babagana Monguno (rtd), the Director-General of the National Intelligence Agency (NIA), Ahmed Rufa’i Abubakar, and the Chairman/CEO of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NidCOM), Abike Dabiri-Erewa are also in the President’s entourage.
