The Lagos State Government has announced plans to introduce a structured on-street parking system as part of efforts to improve traffic flow, reduce indiscriminate parking and create a more organised transport environment across the state.
The General Manager of the Lagos State Parking Authority (LASPA), Adebisi Adelabu, said the initiative is designed to ensure motorists park responsibly while making better travel decisions before leaving for their destinations.
She explained that drivers should begin factoring parking availability into their journey planning, alongside choosing the most suitable means of transportation. According to her, parking should no longer be an afterthought but an important part of every trip.
Adelabu disclosed that LASPA has completed the necessary planning, testing and system upgrades required for the programme, paving the way for its implementation.
Under the new arrangement, approved streets will have clearly marked parking zones indicating where parking is permitted, where parking fees apply and areas where parking is prohibited.
She also urged motorists to pay attention to traffic signs and road markings, including red, single yellow and double yellow lines, noting that they are intended to improve road safety and ease traffic congestion.
The LASPA boss said while many Lagos residents already pay for parking in parts of the state, the new system will ensure the process is transparent, properly regulated and beneficial to the public rather than informal operators.
She called on residents and motorists to cooperate with the government by complying with parking regulations and observing designated parking areas, stressing that public support will be essential to achieving a safer, more accessible and better-managed road network in Lagos.
