The Lagos State Government has announced plans to roll out special number plates for People Living With Disabilities (PWDs) in a bid to promote inclusivity and recognition.
The initiative was revealed by the Commissioner for Transportation, Mr. Oluwaseun Osiyemi, during the 2025 Ministerial Press Briefing held in Lagos on Tuesday.
The event was part of activities marking the second anniversary of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s second term in office.
“This initiative is in line with the THEMES Plus policy framework, which emphasises social inclusion and equity. It reflects our commitment to building an inclusive Lagos,” Osiyemi said.
According to him, the Lagos State Number Plate Production Authority (LSNPPA) will be responsible for the design and issuance of the new plates. He further noted that the agency had produced 218,400 standard plates between May 2024 and March 2025.
“The LSNPPA remains the manufacturing arm of the state, not only producing number plates but also supporting infrastructure with aluminum-based road furniture,” the commissioner stated.
He added that 716 customized fancy vehicle plates, 347 fancy motorcycle plates, 224 out-of-series plates, and thousands of official, dealer, and articulated vehicle plates were produced during the review period.
Addressing concerns over fading plates, Osiyemi clarified, “We use high-quality materials, but some cleaning products are corrosive. Just like humans have a lifespan, number plates do too. They should be replaced when the need arises.”
The commissioner also hinted at a collaboration with the Federal Road Safety Corps to introduce eco-friendly number plates, supporting Lagos’ broader “Go Green” campaign.
