Lagos State Government has announced plans to begin the controlled demolition of the distressed Great Nigeria Insurance House on Lagos Island on Thursday, October 15, 2026, to prevent potential threats to lives and property.

The Permanent Secretary of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, LASEMA, Dr Olufemi Damilola Oke-Osanyintolu, said the decision followed structural assessments by relevant agencies, which established that the building posed a significant danger to public safety.

He explained that the demolition would be conducted under controlled conditions and in accordance with global best practices to minimise risks and protect lives and property.

According to him, the immediate vicinity of the building would be cordoned off throughout the operation, with access restricted to prevent members of the public from entering the danger zone.
