The Lagos State Government has created 3,941 new parking slots across major areas in a bold move to ease the city’s notorious traffic congestion.
Speaking during the Y2025 Ministerial Press Briefing to mark the second year of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s second term, the Commissioner for Transportation, Mr. Oluwaseun Osiyemi, said the initiative aims to “tackle indiscriminate parking and improve vehicular movement across the state.”
Osiyemi explained that the Lagos State Parking Authority (LASPA) was set up to regulate illegal parking and “deliver a world-class parking system” while promoting “voluntary compliance with the Lagos State parking policy.”
The commissioner highlighted that the state’s parking scheme has been zoned into five key areas: Ikeja, Ikoyi, Lekki, Victoria Island, and Surulere.
“This strategic zoning is expected to streamline parking operations and minimize congestion caused by unauthorized parking practices,” he said.
In addition to the new parking facilities, the government has installed 669 parking signages to guide motorists. “The signage will contribute to a more structured and user-friendly parking system,” Osiyemi added.
He urged Lagos residents to make use of designated parking areas to avoid penalties, stressing the administration’s ongoing commitment to improving transport infrastructure.
Meanwhile, enforcement efforts by the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) have intensified. In the first half of 2024, 9,370 vehicles were impounded for various traffic violations, including illegal parking, under the Lagos State Transport Sector Reform Law of 2018.
The announcement aligns with the state’s broader transport policy unveiled in May 2024, which focuses on upgrading road infrastructure, enhancing traffic management, and promoting non-motorized transport to make commuting easier and safer.
