A woman who mistakenly transferred N1,640,200 into an account linked to Pastor Jerry Eze’s Streams of Joy International has recovered the money after her appeal on social media drew the church’s attention.

Sandra Okpara, a single mother of two, said she made the transfer by mistake on Friday while attempting to pay more than N1.6m into a Zenith Bank account.

According to her, she had earlier sent N1,000 as an offering before accidentally selecting the wrong account for the larger transaction. She only discovered the error after checking the transfer receipt.

Alarmed by the mistake, Okpara said she contacted her bank and later Moniepoint in an attempt to retrieve the funds. However, she said she was informed that a court order was required to proceed with the recovery.

She subsequently posted a video online appealing to members of Streams of Joy International and others who could help trace the recipient of the money.

The video attracted attention from the church, which said it contacted Okpara after becoming aware of her appeal.

In a statement posted on X on Saturday, Streams of Joy International said it investigated the transaction and returned the funds to her.

The church explained that it had not received any formal complaint from Okpara through its phone lines, email or direct-message channels before she published the video.

It said it immediately reached out to her after seeing the appeal and proceeded with the refund after confirming the details of the transaction.

Okpara later confirmed that the N1.64m had been returned to her.

She said a church staff member contacted her at about 6:22 am on Saturday, after which the money was refunded.

The woman said she had shared the video to get help locating the funds and insisted that she did not intend to damage the reputation of Pastor Jerry Eze or the church.

She described the experience as an example of how social media can help resolve urgent situations when the right people see an appeal.
