A senior finance commander of the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) has surrendered to troops of Operation Hadin Kai in Borno State, marking another development in the military’s ongoing campaign against insurgents in the North-East.

The Nigerian Army said the suspect turned himself in on Friday morning to soldiers of the 3 Battalion under the 24 Task Force Brigade along the Ladari–Jegarawa–Tunokalia route on the Gamboru–Wulgo Main Supply Route. He was accompanied by two male children.

According to the Army, preliminary findings identified the surrendered suspect as the finance officer for the ISWAP camp in Jubillaram, where he was responsible for handling the group’s funds and logistical support.

Military authorities said troops recovered one AK-47 rifle, four magazines, 101 rounds of 7.62mm special ammunition, a motorcycle and ₦40,000 from the suspect.

The Acting Military Information Officer for Operation Hadin Kai, Capt. Mohammed Goni, said the surrender followed sustained military pressure through coordinated land and air operations targeting terrorist hideouts across the region.

He added that the latest development comes amid an increase in the number of insurgents laying down their arms, noting that about 46 terrorists and their family members have surrendered to troops in recent days.

The Army said the suspect is undergoing profiling and interrogation to obtain intelligence that could assist ongoing operations against remaining terrorist cells.

Military authorities described the surrender as a setback for ISWAP, saying it reflects the weakening of the group’s operational and financial networks as security forces continue offensive operations in the North-East.

The Army also urged other insurgents to take advantage of the Federal Government’s non-kinetic initiatives by surrendering, while encouraging members of the public to continue providing credible information to support counter-terrorism efforts.
