Iraq has pledged $40 million to support the reconstruction of Gaza and Lebanon following a fresh wave of Israeli airstrikes that reportedly killed at least 140 people in the Palestinian territory.
Speaking at the Arab League summit in Baghdad on Saturday, Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani announced the creation of an Arab Solidarity Fund aimed at rebuilding war-torn Palestinian cities.
“Iraq will contribute $20 million each to Gaza and Lebanon as part of efforts to rebuild and support our brothers in crisis,” Sudani stated.
His announcement came just hours after the Israeli military launched a new offensive in Gaza, codenamed Operation Gideon’s Chariots.
The Israeli army said the operation was intended to “achieve all the war’s objectives, including the release of the abducted and the defeat of Hamas.”
In a statement, the army confirmed it had struck “over 150 terror targets throughout the Gaza Strip” in the past 24 hours.
According to Gaza’s civil defence agency, at least 100 people were killed on Friday, with the death toll rising by Saturday.
At the summit, Arab leaders issued a joint communiqué calling for an immediate end to the bloodshed and a unified national agenda for Palestine.
They also urged the international community to support reconstruction and humanitarian efforts.
Israel resumed its military campaign on March 18 after a two-month truce, amid growing pressure on Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to ease the blockade on Gaza as humanitarian groups warn of severe shortages of food, water, fuel, and medicine.
