Prince Adewole Adebayo, the 2023 presidential candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), has expressed his willingness to step aside for a stronger candidate in the 2027 presidential election.
Speaking during an interview on Channels Television’s Inside Sources with Laolu Akande, Adebayo emphasized his commitment to Nigeria’s future, stating, “It is my prayer to God that if there is a person who God thinks is better than me to fix the problem of Nigeria, my ambition should not stop that person because we want a country that works.”
Adebayo, a lawyer, made it clear that while he harbors presidential ambitions, he is open to the possibility of stepping down if a more capable candidate emerges.
He further added, “Everybody knows that I have an aspiration. I’m working on it, but God is the author of tomorrow; we don’t even know who is going to be around in 2027.”
He reassured Nigerians that the SDP is focused on providing a credible alternative to the current leadership and that the party’s candidate would be someone who could truly address the nation’s challenges.
“Our goal is to ensure that when we make a choice in the SDP, Nigerians, even outside the party, will feel a sense of relief and say, ‘Finally, this platform has given the country a real chance,’” he said.
Adebayo also spoke about the need for the SDP to remain free from the negative traits often seen in Nigerian politics, such as corruption, bribery, and the exploitation of religious and ethnic sentiments.
On this, he emphasized, “We will not use the SDP forum to divide Nigerians along these lines.”
He also addressed the influx of new members into the SDP, noting that they must embrace the party’s ideals and adhere to its constitution.
“If you want to come to the SDP, you have to allow us to apply disinfectant—not because we don’t respect you, but because you are coming from a highly infected zone,” he explained, citing the importance of ensuring the party remains free from corruption and criminality.
