Abia State Government has slammed former Governor Okezie Ikpeazu for inaugurating an incomplete and unsafe Government House just 24 hours before leaving office.
Abia State’s current government has accused Okezie Ikpeazu, the immediate past governor, of rushing to inaugurate a new Government House that is far from habitable. Prince Okey Kanu, the state’s Commissioner for Information, claims that the facility, located at Ogurube Layout in Umuahia, is not even close to being suitable for use.
“This place appears uninhabitable,” Kanu stated during a recent tour of the complex. “There are no wardrobes, no proper furnishings—just empty halls. It’s clear that this was never intended as a residential building.”
The Government House, which was hurriedly inaugurated by Ikpeazu’s administration, is reportedly incomplete. Kanu pointed out that only the first floor of the building appears finished, while the rest remains a construction zone.
“There’s no elevator installed, and the place is dangerous,” he added. “If anyone missteps here, they could fall to their death.”
He also criticized the rushed nature of the project, suggesting that the previous administration used it as a façade to deceive the public into thinking it was a completed Government House.
“This structure was built with the state’s resources but serves no practical purpose. It’s not even habitable,” Kanu concluded.
The controversy has gained attention after Ikpeazu’s aides claimed that the new Government House was abandoned by the current Governor, Alex Otti. However, Kanu and Otti’s camp have strongly refuted these claims, highlighting the building’s unfinished and unsafe conditions.
