The governorship candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress in Rivers State, Blessing Fubara, has said his political journey is not backed by any godfather, insisting that his confidence comes solely from his faith in God.

Speaking during an interview on Prime Time, Fubara stressed that his ambition should not be linked to any external political sponsor or assumed to be influenced by family ties.

He noted that although he shares a family relationship with Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara, their political beliefs and approaches are not the same, adding that both men operate on separate ideological paths.

According to him, interpretations suggesting that his candidacy is being driven by his brother’s political structure are misleading and do not reflect his personal intentions or vision for the state.

Fubara also described the political climate in Rivers as tense, saying there have been competing narratives aimed at shaping public perception around his ambition. He maintained that his focus remains on what he described as efforts to reposition the state.

His comments come amid ongoing political tensions in Rivers State, involving a prolonged dispute between Governor Siminalayi Fubara and former governor and current Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike. The rift has fuelled divisions within the state’s political structure and triggered wider national attention.

The situation has also been marked by shifting alliances, legal disputes, and instability within the state assembly, contributing to uncertainty in the state’s political landscape.

Blessing Fubara formally entered the 2027 governorship race after obtaining nomination forms under the Nigeria Democratic Congress in May 2026, further intensifying political activities ahead of the election cycle.
