Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar has defended his opposition to former President Olusegun Obasanjo’s alleged third-term agenda, declaring that he has no regrets for resisting what he described as an unconstitutional move.

Reacting to Obasanjo’s recent claim that choosing him as running mate in the 1999 presidential election was the biggest mistake of his presidency, Atiku said he would always stand by his decision to protect Nigeria’s Constitution and democratic order.

In a statement issued on Saturday by his media aide, Phrank Shaibu, Atiku dismissed Obasanjo’s remarks as an attempt to rewrite history. He maintained that the campaign against the third-term proposal was about preserving democracy, not personal rivalry.

The former vice-president also recalled supporting Obasanjo during his imprisonment and after his release, claiming he provided personal and political assistance that helped pave the way for Obasanjo’s emergence as president in 1999.

Atiku said he harbours no regret over the support he gave Obasanjo, insisting that acts of kindness should not be driven by expectations of gratitude. He also urged political leaders to focus on addressing Nigeria’s economic and security challenges instead of reopening old political disputes ahead of the 2027 general election.

He added that while he had remained silent for years out of respect for the former president, he would continue to challenge what he described as attempts to distort historical facts, insisting that history would ultimately judge the actions of all those involved.
