Aliko Dangote, the President and Chief Executive Officer of Dangote Group, has expressed his gratitude after being appointed to the World Bank’s Private Sector Investment Lab, a body focused on boosting investment and job creation in emerging economies.

In a statement following his appointment, Dangote said, “I am both honoured and excited to accept my appointment to the World Bank’s Private Sector Investment Lab, dedicated to advancing investment and employment in emerging economies.”

He emphasized that the opportunity aligns with his long-standing commitment to sustainable development and unlocking the potential of developing economies. “Drawing inspiration from the remarkable successes of the Asian Tigers, which have demonstrated the power of strategic investment and focused economic policy, I am eager to collaborate with fellow leaders to replicate such outcomes across other regions,” Dangote stated.

The World Bank’s expansion of its Private Sector Investment Lab aims to attract private capital to support economic growth in developing markets. The Lab’s new phase will focus on creating job opportunities by overcoming investment barriers, with Dangote among the high-profile leaders involved in this global effort.

The World Bank’s President, Ajay Banga, highlighted the importance of these initiatives, saying, “This isn’t about altruism—it’s about helping the private sector see a path to investments that will deliver returns and lift people and economies alike.”

Dangote’s appointment to the Lab also brings additional recognition to the Dangote Group, which is the largest conglomerate in West Africa, with diversified interests spanning cement, fertiliser, salt, sugar, and oil. With more than 30,000 employees, the company is one of the largest private employers in Nigeria.

In addition to his business interests, Dangote’s philanthropic efforts through the Aliko Dangote Foundation focus on child nutrition, health, education, empowerment, and disaster relief, positioning him as one of Africa’s most influential business figures.

The World Bank’s Private Sector Investment Lab aims to replicate the success of previous initiatives, such as the £1 trillion sustainable investment plan for the energy transition in emerging markets, co-chaired by Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney in 2023.

With Dangote’s leadership, the Lab hopes to continue its pivotal role in expanding investments and generating jobs in emerging economies.
