Former National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Bamanga Tukur, has died at the age of 90.

Tukur reportedly died on Saturday, September 12, 2026, according to family sources.

The former politician and businessman had a long career in Nigeria’s public and private sectors, holding several senior positions under both military and civilian administrations.

Born on September 15, 1935, Tukur served as the governor of the old Gongola State in 1983. He later became Minister of Industries during the administration of former military Head of State, General Sani Abacha.

He also served as Managing Director of the Nigerian Ports Authority and was involved in various business and development activities in Nigeria and other parts of Africa.

Tukur became National Chairman of the PDP in March 2012, taking charge of the party when it was Nigeria’s ruling political party.

His tenure was marked by growing disagreements within the party, particularly among its governors and senior leaders. The internal crisis deepened in 2013 after a group of governors and other influential members formed a breakaway faction.

Amid the worsening divisions, Tukur stepped down as PDP national chairman in January 2014.

He remained active and influential in political and business circles after leaving the party’s leadership.

His death comes just days before his 91st birthday and marks the end of the career of a prominent Nigerian political and business figure who played roles across several decades of the country’s political history.

He is survived by his family.
